ICELAND

Travel Writing at Home & Abroad

This past semester I had an exciting opportunity to branch out academically and learn about something I’ve always been interested in: travel writing. I want to take advantage of every opportunity I have to travel and to be capable of writing about my experiences in a meaningful way is beyond valuable to me. Journalistic writing is a little ways out of my wheelhouse as a biology major, but I really enjoyed developing my story-telling skills in a new way. I think it would be really cool to explore writing opportunities on the side in whatever career I have in the future. Making information accessible through writing is incredibly important and I would like to be a part of making people feel like they are connected to the world around them.

Another part of the class was an incredible nine-day trip to Iceland over winter break. I had an amazing time exploring the country and its intersection between the environment and urban development. Natural forces and human ingenuity clash on this island and it was amazing to see how people have harnessed the power of volcanoes in successful designs for sustainable energy. It’s a beautiful place to visit—for both nature and city lovers—and I hope to go back soon.

Below I have linked two samples of my writing as well as the travel blog I started for this class.
