SCIENCE & CREATIVITY

In this class, I got to explore the intersections of science and creativity through classwork and an independent project. I was introduced to coding in Python, how a Raspberry Pi computer works, 3-D computer modeling, soldering, breadboard circuits, and a variety of projects that utilize these different tools. It was really interesting to see the wide range of applications for coding and how much creative design is involved in each. I really enjoyed seeing all the cool projects my classmates came up with -- a soil monitor that emails when your plant needs watered, a stage lighting keyboard, and a LED quilting ruler to name a few. I also really enjoyed learning from all the different perspectives in the class. As a science major, I don't often get to interact with other types of students --

like engineering, design, and business -- in my typical courses. With everyone's different background, it was fun to discuss problems and solutions related to our project ideas. I can definitely see how the skills I learned in this class would be valuable in my future career as a scientist and conservation biologist.

My roommate and I worked together to create a weather forecast cloud. The LED lights in it change colors depending on the forecast for the following day. We ran into our fair share of issues between being delivered the wrong circuit parts and having some issues with our code. However, the awesome thing with this class, and with both scientific pursuits and creative endeavors, is that the beauty is in the process and the learning, rather than solely in the final product.
